Indigenous People Language Preservation

In the Philippines, language distinguishes one ethnic group from the other. It is a cultural mark representing the way of life as well as the ecology of the people possessing it. Disintegrating language may therefore be an indication of a dying identity and a deteriorating natural environment. Helping save language means helping save cultural identity which also requires helping save the natural environment. Thru my own little ways, I believe I am contributing to the preservation of language, identity and natural environment of the indigenous peoples of Southern Sierra Madre, particularly, the Hatang Kaye-speaking Dumagats (Kaliwa) and the Umiray-speaking Dumagats (Kanan). Way back 2008, I distributed copies of the Tagalog-Hatang Kaye dictionary printed by my thesis advisees. I am also looking forward to establish contact and friendship with the Agtas of Alabat Island and the Bihugs of the northern parts of Bicol peninsula.
